  • Lisa Custalow is among the descendant community of the 500 mountain families who lived with the land that is now Shenandoah National Park.  In 1994, along with her husband Curtis K. Custalow (Mattaponi Indian Nation), she Co-founded The Children of Shenandoah, an organization dedicated to the preservation of the heritage and the culture of the people who once lived on the land and were displaced for the creation of the Park.  Among the organization’s accomplishments was working to improve the portrayal of these families in public-facing exhibits and other media within the Park. More recently, she joined community initiatives to honor the sacrifices made by families in the eight counties where land was acquired for the Park’s creation. Lisa earned a B.A. in Sociology and Early Education from Mary Baldwin University (1990) and an A.A.S. in Criminal Justice Studies from Piedmont Virginia Community College (1988).
